Remove Locky Ransomware and Decrypt Files

By | Posted on February 18, 2016 | Updated on August 21, 2016

Locky Ransomware is a dangerous ransom virus which was made to lock your computer and deny access to your own files. Just like other ransomware, this new threat will encrypt certain files on the computer. It also changes file extensions to .locky one and demand payment before you can regain access and reverse these changes. It demands user to pay an amount of Bitcoins.

Normally, Locky virus attacks a computer with the help of another malware, trojan, or virus. It find flaws on the system which it will utilized as an entry point so that the process is hidden to most antivirus programs. In fact, once Locky Ransomware is inside the PC, it instantly disables any security function running on the target computer.

The lock window contains the following messages:

All your files are encrypted with RSA-2048 and AES-128 ciphers. Decrypting of your files is only possible with the private key and decrypt program, which is on our secret server.

Locky Ransomware looks for important files like documents, spreadsheet, images, music, and videos. Two new documents is then added which gives instructions to users on how to decrypt affected files. In addition, Locky Ransomware blocks access to certain web sites especially security pages where you can download tools and utilities that are useful in cleaning the PC from threats.

System Restore of Windows may help in resolving issues with viruses and malware. However, it will not settle problems with encrypted files. If your computer is running on Windows Vista/7 or later, perhaps ‘Previous Versions’ may help restore files from backup.

How to Remove Locky Ransomware

Ransomware files are placed deeply into the system and on various locations, thus, thorough scanning is vital to totally remove Locky virus. Aside from our suggested tool, you may also run your own security program.

Though affected files may be impossible to decrypt due to complexity of the encryption, you can still try recovery method like Shadow Explorer or Previous Version as described below.

Hallelujah!! ShadowExplorer was the ticket! We tried all the other options and nothing worked, but the very last utility on this list was the cat’s meow!

Same here – did all the virus removal downloads and they came back “clean”, still going to take it in for a thorough sweep. ShadowExplorer got me everything back.

    Hi,
Just ran ESET Rogue Application Remover, and it found nothing. Then ran MS Windows Malicious Removal Tool…and it also did not find anything.

Did this on 2 PC’s, one of which DOES have .locky encrypted files and the locky ransomware text document….

So, are ESET and MS Windows MRT not able to detect locky ransomware??
    Confused, any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Was not able to do System Restore, nor Previous Versions (none found).
Took the hard drive out and attached it to another Windows 7 -64bit computer as a 2nd hard drive.
Ran antivirus scan against the encrypted drive. (clean).
Ran CHKDSK /R against the encrypted drive. (some tweaks, no bad sectors)
Put the hard drive back in original PC.
Was able to do System Restore.
Was able to turn on Service Volume Shadow Copy.
Was able to use Previous Versions. (yay!)

I have on my Win 10 computer ” HKCU\software\Locky” and also ” HKCU\software\h8BJ400j”. These are also in several other parts of Registry.
I delete them all but on rebooting they all re-appear.

I can’t find what is causing their appearance and a search of compute shows no encrypted files.

Can anyone assist? Is this a failed Locky ransonware attempt?
