Remove Horon Ransomware (.horon Decryption)

Horon ransomware is another brainchild of STOP malware developers. There is nothing new to this recent version except for the suffix that it will apply onto infected files after the encryption process. Threats originating from this clan are tasked to lock major files with complex algorithm. This method makes it nearly impossible to open the files, not only for users, but for malware researchers as well. So far, the only method to recover encrypted files is being offered by Horon makers themselves. Hence, the service comes with a hefty price of $980.

Unlike some ransomware, makers of Horon make sure that victims can instantly identify the type of threat that infects their file by appending it with .horon extension. Attackers also left a ransom note on every folder where encrypted files are situated. As declared on the instructions, paying the ransom money is the only way for users to recover encrypted data as attackers are willing to surrender the matching private key and decrypter after collecting the payment. Below is the screenshot of ransom note.

Horon Ransomware

Bear in mind that there are previous incident that cyber crooks did not deliver the goods after the transaction and in fact, they increases the ransom demand in an attempt to swindle more money from victims. There is no similar report yet on Horon ransomware but the scenario is not an isolated case especially when dealing with persons with no identity.

Paying the ransom should not be an option because it only makes the ransomware industry profitable. The right thing to do is restore the files from a backup copy or if this not possible, hold on to the Horon encrypted files and wait until the release of decryption tool. Alternatively, STOPDecrypter may work if files were locked using offline keys. More about this method is explained below.

How to Remove Horon Ransomware

Ransomware files are placed deeply into the system and on various locations, thus, thorough scanning is vital to totally remove Horon virus. Aside from our suggested tool, you may also run your own security program.

Though affected files may be impossible to decrypt due to complexity of the encryption, you can still try recovery method like alternative tool, Shadow Explorer or Previous Version as described below.

Stage 1: Scan the Computer with Anti-Malware Tool

1. Download free anti-malware scanner called MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

It was not designed to protect the computer.

5. Next, you will see Scan Type. Please choose Full Scan to ensure that all Horon ransom virus entities and other harmful files left on the computer will be found and removed. For advanced computer user, you can opt for Customized Scan, if there are other drives or folders you wanted to include in this scan.

Stage 3 : Unlocking files with Horon Decryption Tool

So far, this Horon decryption tool works only for files that were encrypted using offline keys. This happens sometimes if the virus is unable to communicate to remote server to obtain unique keys; instead, it will use offline keys when encrypting files. However, there is a little chance of recovering files using this tool due to limited available offline keys that were integrated with this decryption tool.

For additional information (download link, supported versions, instructions) about StopDecrypter, please proceed to ransomware decryption tool archive page.

If you received a message stating that “No keys were found for the following IDs (.horon)”, please copy and submit the information to the official download page to include your information (log file) and have it archive in case decryption software becomes available.

StopDecrypter Information

We will update this section once the full decryption tool is on hand. In the meantime, please try other options below.
