By | Posted on November 7, 2019 |

Toec is the name of the newly discovered ransomware infection, whose primary purpose is to make all user’s files inaccessible. The virus can accomplish this by encrypting the data with complex algorithm that even malware researchers are having hard time with the decryption. In fact, many victims were not able to recover their .toec infected files due to lack of free recovery tools. Those who can afford to pay the ransom may have chance of getting files their files to original format, but not all were able to receive the required decryption software and private key even if they have formally settle the payment.

As expected, most users who carelessly download cracked programs are in the front line of Toec ransomware attack. Next to them are those who are unwise in opening email attachment where Toec is disguising as valid document file. Obviously, Toec ransomware authors are using so many different methods to trick users into downloading and executing their dreadful creation.

The attack of Toec virus on the computer is normally finished off with majority of files being encrypted and having the .toec extension. The virus appends this suffix to educate victims on the type of STOP or DJVU variants that has infected their computer. Aside from changing the extension, Toec ransomware will generate a ransom note stating that victim must remit a payment amounting to $980 in exchange for private key and decryption software should they want to recover their files. Below is a sample of ransomware note.

As mentioned, not all who paid the ransom money where able to collect necessary objects in recovering encrypted files. This just shows that dealing with cyber crooks is too risky. Ransomware makers can easily flee after receiving the payment and there is no way to track them because they normally operate in discreet identity.
