Truke is a computer virus that is under ransomware category. Having such class, its objective is to lock files on target computer and request payment from victims in order for them to regain access on infected files. STOP family is the origin of Truke ransom virus, so it just adopts all the characteristics and wrongdoings from the said malware group. Truke spreads in the same manner as Neras, Stone, Vesad, and other variants previously released. All of them are utilizing spam email messages to catch a prey. Typically, makers of Truke are mass mailing a bogus message with the virus attached to it. Though, it is in disguise as document or spreadsheet file and it can easily evade user’s suspicion through this technique. Unknown to users, what is actually attached to the message, which is pretending to be from reputable company, is an executable format with tailored icon to appear as MS Office data.
Once opened and executed, Truke will start to drop system files each with unique functions. It can disabled security applications or block users access to website where Truke decryption tool may be available. Then, on the final stage of the attack, it will look for common files and encrypt them with complex algorithm, typically AES-RSA method. After the encryption, Truke generates an instructions stating ways to recover the infected files and specific details to contact the attacker. Here is an excerpt from the ransom note.

Encrypted files with appended .truke extension will remain unusable until it was properly decrypted using tools from malware researchers or cyber crooks. However, solution from latter is not recommended especially that attackers are demanding a too costly ransom payment. As always advice, it is better to archive the files temporarily until official Truke decryption was made available. Alternatively, restoring the files from backup is much easier to accomplish, if there are available.
How to Remove Truke Ransomware
Ransomware files are placed deeply into the system and on various locations, thus, thorough scanning is vital to totally remove Truke virus. Aside from our suggested tool, you may also run your own security program.
Though affected files may be impossible to decrypt due to complexity of the encryption, you can still try recovery method like alternative tool, Shadow Explorer or Previous Version as described below.
Stage 1: Scan the Computer with Anti-Malware Tool

Stage 3 : Unlocking files with Truke Decryption Tool
So far, this Truke decryption tool works only for files that were encrypted using offline keys. This happens sometimes if the virus is unable to communicate to remote server to obtain unique keys; instead, it will use offline keys when encrypting files. However, there is a little chance of recovering files using this tool due to limited available offline keys that were integrated with this decryption tool.
For additional information (download link, supported versions, instructions) about StopDecrypter, please proceed to this discussion page.
If you received a message stating that “No keys were found for the following IDs (.truke)”, please copy and submit the information to the official download page to include your information (log file) and have it archive in case decryption software becomes available.
We will update this section once the full decryption tool is on hand. In the meantime, please try other options below.
