It seems that there is no slowing down on massive propagation of ransomware particularly variants that are originating from STOP family. Another addition to this malware clan is Neras ransom virus. Attackers are utilizing same old ways in malware distribution and it looks that they are concentrating more on software downloads to infect a computer. To convince web users, makers of Neras are investing heavily on malicious advertising campaign that purported to be a software update. Normally, users who carelessly obtain applications from third-party sites are in the forefront of Neras infection. As what security professionals keeps on reiterating, legitimate files can be obtained from official sites, while other sources may provide maliciously modified installers.

Alternatively, Neras ransomware’s another attack routine is through spam email messages. Via mass-mailing scheme, random recipients may pickup an email allegedly from prominent organization and implying to open the attachment because it contains critical information. Without user’s awareness, opening the attached file will execute Neras ransomware and begin to drop various malicious files on system directories.

Neras will then search the infected computer for target files and lock them with highly complex encryption algorithm. Having been appended by .neras file extension signifies that it is encrypted and will remain inoperable until victim is able to pay the ransom money and retrieve the private key and decryption software from Neras developers. Below is the screenshot of the ransom note dropped by the ransomware on the location folder of encrypted files.

Neras Ransomware

Archiving the encrypted files while waiting for Neras recovery tool is probably the wisest thing to do rather than releasing huge amount of money to cyber criminals. With regards to removal of the ransomware, we made a simple guide on this page to get rid of the threat using effective malware scanner.

This happens sometimes if the virus is unable to communicate to remote server to obtain unique keys; instead, it will use offline keys when encrypting files. However, there is a little chance of recovering files using this tool due to limited available offline keys that were integrated with this decryption tool.
